AIA and Star Tribune Home of the Month
Just five minutes from the heart of Minneapolis, this 2,330-square-foot modern home was designed for a young family seeking a modern, yet warm and inviting space. Situated on a uniquely challenging, pie-shaped reverse corner lot, the home’s layout was carefully crafted to enhance natural light, maximize views, and create strong indoor-outdoor connections.
The site planning responds to its irregular geometry with two thoughtfully oriented volumes, staggered to follow zoning setbacks and capture southeast views of the nearby park and city skyline. One façade engages the park across the street, while the other frames a more informal and welcoming entry alongside an attached carport.
Inside, the main level hosts the home’s public spaces. A subtle shift in ceiling volume defines the living area, fostering a sense of openness that suits the family’s dynamic lifestyle. The design embraces the land by stepping the patio down to the natural grade, reflecting the gentle roll of the site.
A restrained material palette ensures visual harmony between interior and exterior. Clear western red cedar and solid walnut flooring bring a sense of warmth and continuity throughout, reinforcing the home’s balance of modern design and natural comfort.
